Seed collections of 70 endangered plant species from Sicily

Seed collections of 70 endangered plant species from Sicily have recently arrived to the Millennium Seed Bank (4^th of December 2012 and 18^th of January 2013).

They were already clean and they will be stored in the seed bank in the coming weeks. Duplicates of these collections are already stored in the University of Catania.

PREPARANDO LA TEMPORADA DE RECOLECCION PARA IBIZA Y FORMENTERA

Este año 2013, una representación de la flora más singular de Ibiza y Formentera, se podrá incorporar a las colecciones del Banco de Germoplasma del Jardín Botánico de Sóller (Mallorca) y duplicarse en el Millennium Seed Bank en Kew (Londres).

A finales de Marzo, cuando muchas especies ya habían empezado su floración se recorrieron las poblaciones más representativas de Ibiza y Formentera para preparar la recolección de semillas. Se observaron especies tan amenazadas como Hippocrepis grosii, Hypericum balearicum, Leucanthemum paludosum subsp. ebusitanum, Delphinium pentagynum subsp. formenteranum, Thymus richardii subsp. ebusitanus, Linaria pedunculata, etc.

Con la base de la expedición en San Mateu d’Albarca, un pueblecito situado al norte de la Isla de Ibiza, se visitaron las zonas con más endemismos: Ses Balandres, Ses Torretes, Cap Blanc e incluso la isla vecina de Formentera.

Las poblaciones en estado más avanzado en cuanto a su fenología fueron las de Leucanthemum paludosum subsp. ebusitanum, un endemismo de Ibiza que coloniza pequeños rellanos de prados terofíticos y del que se conocen escasas poblaciones. Se trata de una especie anual de la familia de las Compuestas, que presenta grandes fluctuaciones interanuales según el periodo de sequía que haya sufrido durante el invierno y la primavera. Este año sus poblaciones son abundantes y resultaran aptas para realizar una excelente recolección para conservar la especie ex situ en los bancos de semillas.

La poblaciones visitadas de esta especie amenazada (categoría EN según UICN), están sujetas a la amenaza de la alteración de su hábitat por causas antrópicas ya que se encuentran en zonas con presión humana. Esta especie no se encuentra por ahora representada en colecciones vivas o bancos de semillas por lo que la recolección prevista para esta primavera será pionera. Las plantas resultantes de las pruebas de viabilidad que se realizarán en el Jardín Botánico de Sóller se integrarán en la Colección de Planta Viva del Botánico y, por primera vez, serán cultivadas. Significará una interesante e innovadora experiencia poder obtener datos de la oscilación en efectivos de una población cultivada de esta especie ibicenca tan amenazada.

Great Project Milestone! All seed collections from 1st year duplicated in the Millennium Seed Bank

Good news!
This week the last batch from the first MAVA Project collecting season arrived at the Millennium Seed Bank. This batch contained 25 collections of Sardinian plant species.

It is a great milestone for the project. In total 520 collections of 446 plant taxa have been duplicated in the MSB as a result of the first collecting season.

Now all the partners have started the second collecting season, and we are preparing a joint field trip in the first week in July to collect seeds in the Troodos area (Cyprus), within the Forest National Park and Natura 2000 site.  Watch this space!

Seeds collections from Cyprus arrived to the Millennium Seed Bank

Last week the first batch with seed collections, after the second seed collecting season of the project, have arrived to the Millennium Seed Bank. The partners from The Agricultural Research Institute Nicosia have sent 44 high quality seed collections. Most of them belong to endemic and threatened plant species like Arabis purpurea, Onobrychis venosa, Astragalus cyprius, Bupleurum sintenenisii, Silene laevigata, Allium cupani subsp. cyprium, Ranunculus kykkoensis or Gypsophila linearifolia.

The seeds were collected by the staff of the Cyprus Forest Association and few of them were collected by all the project partners during the joint field trip we did in July. The seeds have been cleaned and curated by the staff from The Agricultural Research Institute Nicosia.

During this second seed collecting season 406 collections from 329 species has been collected. Added to the species collected during the first year of the project represent 752 taxa. That means that we have achieved 83.5% of the project main goal.

We are looking forwards to receive the rest of the batches in the coming months.
